From Dick Nixon:
This is fun...I'm not sure why I find the band photo so interesting. Here are some random thoughts.
-------------
You might label the photo as "Nathaniel White School Band, 1953/54". [If you disagree on the date, let me know. I am quite certain of this.] These are kids in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade (MHS 58, CHS 59, 60 and 61.)
I may be wrong, but I assume that the girls in back, 31-44, are all 8th graders. Makes sense that the older girls would be majorettes. But if any of them are Irene Bailey, Marilyn Kilpatrick, or Joan Scott my theory breaks down. (Of the 3, 43 looks just like Joan Scott in her 5th grade pic in Early Years '60). Irene Bailey is an obvious choice for a majorette IF they reached down to 6th grade for one but I don't think it is her, looks too old for 6th grade. Same for Marilyn. Same logic for Irene Planeta but less so...she was 7th grade. But I doubt it is her.
Apparently Sharon Gardner, Carol Larsen, and Janet Bergere are baton twirlers and a separate group.
Why are R. James and D. Pierson in that back row with the majorettes and twirlers? Flag bearers????
Take a look at Richard Snow in Early Years '59, grade 7 and grade 8. I don't see it. Dave Schultz was not thin! I don't remember him from band but we were in the Boy Scouts together for years. He was always older and bigger than anyone else (we gave him the Bass Drum to carry). My only reservation is that he may have been in 9th grade that year because I remember him as so much bigger than me in the Scouts.
I have been trying to find a list of band members for that year but no joy.
BUT----I did just find, in an old scrapbook of my mother's, an old school newspaper article by Janice Groeper Grade 6. This would be only 1 year later! or 54/55 but of course no help with the MHS kids. And the band got a lot of new names. Easiest to just transcribe it.............

THE BAND FESTIVAL
by Janice Groeper---Grade 6
The School Band hopes to go the Band Festival in Weathersfield. The two towns where the festival is to be held this year are North Haven and Weathersfield. The Festival will be held from 12:30 - 5:00 p.m. on May 12th.
Our band is going to play three selections. They are "Honor Band" by Ernest Weber, "Pacific Grandeur" by J. Ovivadoti, and the "Wave of the Danube" by J. Ivanovici.
There are 48 band members. They are R. Skinner, H. Oslund, K. Hedlund, C. Schulke, P., Luistro, W. Eckersley, M Grower, J. Groeper, J. Henderson, J. Adams, O. Riggott, E. Garde, P. Buggie, R. Strom, H. Hodge, C. Probst, D. Jensen, B. Planeta, K. Heidenis, B. Donovan, R. Nixon, R. Anderson, R. Barker, F. Petrello [sic], J. Moore, M. Ward, C. Pierce, C. Overand, C. Ward, D. Geer, C. Hatfield, E. Young, R. Grant, R. Bengston, J. Palmer, P. Fleet, R.Greger, C. Salonia, J. Hintz, C. Burr, D. Pattee, B. Nordgren, C. Andrelski, S. Gardiner [sic], C. Larson, J. Bergere.

[I count only 46 here and in the original.]
I guess it may confirm Young, Grant, and M. Ward. Looks like the 3 baton twirlers are intact but no Majorettes listed....except C. Andrelski! So I guess the drum majorette and the twirlers are part of the band but not the majorettes.
I may be wrong on my "not Barker" for the photo, but not proven.
Note that R. James and D. Pierson are not here, whatever they did the year before. I bet on flag bearers even more. Maybe they were the 47 and 48 for the marching band??
Nor are L. Smith, R. Spack, or R. Snow in the list--3 suggested names for the year-before photo who would not have graduated.
