~ Howard Francis Nielsen, Sr ~
1925 - 2014



Howard Francis Nielsen, Sr., a lifelong resident of Cromwell and loving husband of Katherine (Ewald) Nielsen for 65 years, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, March 21st.

Son of the late Nels Howard Nielsen and Florence Guile, Howard was born at home on July 11th 1925 in Rocky Hill. Howard served in the Army Air Corp during WWII in the Pacific Theater after graduating from Middletown High School. He worked for Aetna Insurance Company (CIGNA) for 37 years and then became General Manager of the CT FAIR Plan. Locally Howard was active in multiple volunteer capacities including the Town Insurance Commission, Cromwell Fire District, and the State Board of Fire Marshalls. Howard established the State Fire Prevention Poster Contest, the Statewide Arson Hotline and Arson Educational Assistance Program. He was active in Cromwell's American Legion Post 105 and Knights of Columbus DeSoto #6. In 2001 he was Cromwell Man of the Year in recognition of his many years of service.

In addition to his wife, Kae, he leaves his sons, Mark Nielsen of Jupiter, FL and Howard Nielsen, Jr. of Cromwell; two daughters, Christine (John) Williams of Simsbury and Elizabeth Nielsen of Middletown; five grandchildren, Daniel Nielsen, William Williams, Matthew (Jennifer) Carling, Emily Carling, and Stephanie Nielsen; one great-grandson, Jordyn Kneeland; two brothers, Robert Nielsen of Middletown, and Roger Nielsen of Viero, FL; his sister, Betty Fennelly of Cromwell and his daughter-in-law, Leslie Nielsen of Ione, CA. Along with his parents, Howard was predeceased by his third son, Niel Nielsen.

A special thank you is due to Naomi Harris who was Howard's caregiver for the last few years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 25th at 10:00am at Saint John Roman Catholic Church, 5 Saint John Court, Cromwell. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park in Rocky Hill where full military honors will be accorded. Family and friends may call on Monday, March 24th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main Street, Cromwell.
